Ingredients
For filling
- 5 large Bramley apples, approximately 1kg
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp dark brown sugar
- 2 tbsp white granulated sugar
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
For the crumble
- 60g white granulated sugar
- 60g butter, cooled
- 120g plain flour
Additionally
- butter for greasing the dish
- icing sugar for dusting
Method
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius with the fan on.
Let’s make the crumble.
Combine the sugar, butter and flour in a medium bowl.
Rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Work quickly so that the butter doesn’t melt.
Put it into the fridge while you do the next steps.
Let’s make filling.

Peel, halve, core, and cut apples into bite-sized pieces.

Place them in a frying pan, add the sugar, cinnamon, and butter.

Cook, stirring frequently, until softened for about 7-10 minutes.
Taste and adjust sweetness with additional sugar, as desired.
Prepare an ovenproof dish by greasing the bottom and sides with a little butter.
I used an 11" (30.2x18.9x6.8cm) oval ceramic baking dish.

Transfer the apples to the dish in an even layer, then top with the crumbled dough and spread evenly.

Bake for 25 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown and crispy.

Dust it with icing sugar and serve, while hot, in bowls with custard.

You can microwave to reheat before serving.
